The 4 Seasons of Life
Purpose, Passion, Potential and Position…there is a nice ring to this alliteration. Dig deeper, and there is a greater truth to be discovered as we progress through life.
What type of life do we want to live? A purpose-driven life, a passion-driven life, a life driven by the need to fulfil one’s potential, or a life driven by the race for position? More crucially, where are you in these four seasons? Are you stuck in one season? Or are you looking to remain in one season when the days have clearly moved on?
Ultimately, one eventually discovers that position, potential and passion are necessary but insufficient for meaningful living. One’s life is worth the living only when one’s purpose is clearly worked out and found worthy. However, it is one thing to say what the end state ought to be. It is another to immediately arrive to it. For to do so is akin to telling a baby that the ultimate goal is to walk and to demand that the child gets up and start walking. No, while the truth needs to be told, the temple of one’s body needs to be prepared. This preparation is not only essential, it is part of the blessings for a well-lived life.
Each Season in its Own Time
In arriving at purposeful living, one will encounter the place of position, the promise of potential and the power of passion. Much as one tries to shortcut the process, it is unwise to sidestep the lessons each season brings to one’s development. Conversely, it is harmful when one tries to delay the coming of the next season. One can have too much of a good thing.
Too much of a position-driven life and one discovers a vacuum that cannot be filled
Too much of a life seeking to fulfil potential and one encounters the futility of knowledge without impact
Too much of a passion-driven life and one becomes worn out, rootless from one passion project to another
What is needed is
to reflect on where one is,
to reap from its harvest, and
to sow in preparation for the next season.
In the next post, I will share my reflections on the place of position.
